A jewel in the Caribbean, and the island that has my favorite beach sand! Barbados is home to some of the friendliest people, the best Caribbean cuisine, music, and ADVENTURE. I had the chance to interview a "World Travel Newbie" and a "Seasoned World Traveler" to explore why they travel and what they loved about Barbados.
Q: Why Travel?
Patricia, Newbie: I woke up one day and I was no longer a mother in the traditional sense. LOL! My children no longer needed me and I thought, "What will I do with this second half of my life?" My best friend is a world class traveler and I had promised we would go to Australia together. well, I didn't get my passport in enough time and she had to go alone. I decided I wasn't going to miss another trip. Barbados was the next trip on deck for her travel group. Since Barbados, wasn't that far from the U.S. she thought it would be a great way to ease me into the world of travel.
Sherryl, Seasoned: I love to travel because I love to have new experiences, meet people from different cultures, and I love to learn. Some of my most significant life lessons have happened while traveling. I wanted to visit Barbados because it was literally a dream come true! I had a vivid dream that I was in Barbados and it was wonderful! Barbados was even better than my dream because I got to experience it with my friend Patricia. I enjoyed introducing her to island culture and food. Her being with me made the trip so special for me.
Q: Favorite Dish?
Patricia: I loved the red snapper at Oistin's Fish Fry
Sherryl: Literally EVERYTHING our chef cooked! She made a variety of Bajan dishes and they were all delicious. It's hard to choose a favorite. I also enjoyed the grilled snapper in Oistin's Bay.
Q: Best Adventure?
Patricia: I absolutely loved the Catamaran Day Cruise! I never learned to swim, but so wanted to get into the water especially after everyone was jumping in. There were only four of us left. I had swimming in the ocean on my "bucket list," but never thought I'd be able to scratch it off. I mentioned to one of the crew how much I wanted to just get into the oceanand she told me she would help me. It was a moving experience being in that ocean and knowing that I had accomplished something I always wanted to do. I got choked up a bit and it really made me think I need to dream a lot bigger during this last half of my life.
Sherryl: This was a relaxing trip for me, so I didn't do anything adventurous. I'd say the most "adventurous" thing I did was take the local bus from St. James parish into Bridgetown, with reggae music blasting, the driver going at super fast speeds over potholes (with no shock absoprtion on the bus), and having to hold on for dear life.

Have these travelers inspired you to explore this "Great Big World?" This month in Barbados, Crop Over Festival events are celebrated almost EVERYDAY! If you can't get there this month, August 7th is Kadooment Day, the final day of the festival highlighted with a big parade.
