Preventing the Summer Oil Slick

I’ve been a makeup artist for 11 years, and I can honestly say that I’ve tried it all when it comes to products that claim to “mattify” the skin. So I’ll save you the trouble in selling you pipe dreams, and tell you exactly what I’ve learned about controlling oily skin. Especially in Summer! Then I’ll finish up with the only two products that I’ve ever found that actually work. Trust me, I’ve tried everything else and if it’s not mentioned here, it’s probably a dud. LOL!

Here is the ugly truth

80% of your problem is in Skincare…

If your skin is extremely oily, meaning, within 1 to 3 hours, you could blot with a tissue and the tissue becomes transparent with oil? Your skin is actually dehydrated. *Gasp*

When the skin is not getting adequate moisture, it will over compensate by pumping out more oil. Because the industry took a massive turn in marketing to emotions, instead of products that actually treat the issues, much of what we think can be solved with makeup is actually treated in skin care. Especially the concept of keeping the skin “matte”. So a lot of the primers that are silicone based actually prevent the skins natural ability to breathe, and can overtime create a build up if the proper skincare isn't being used on a regular basis. Simple is better when it comes to skincare, so a brand like Cetaphil is great to start with. And yes! Those with oily skin still need to moisturize, even in the summer. I know this because I have personal experience with it. Understanding what my skin needed came with consulting other experts, learning how diet affects my skin, and getting the right products for me. Over time, my skin does not get nearly as oily as it use to! If I do touch up my makeup at all, it’s maybe once throughout the whole day. Compared to the past, when I constantly looked in a mirror to see how shiny I was. It’s done a lot for my confidence without makeup as well. My advice? Find a great esthetician and start there. In the meantime, here are a few products that can help:

MAC Cosmetics Refined Zone

Apply this after makeup is completely done and set. I squeeze a tiny amount on my hand, and apply it in the t-zone in a tapping motion. This product can also be used throughout the day to touch up as well.

Cover Fx Blotting Powder

Long lasting, not too cakey looking and healthier for the skin. Cover Fx makes makeup that really compliments skincare! I also love how slim and compact the compact is! (See what I did there?) It slides in the tiniest of purses, so you can do a quick touch up wherever you go.

Artist Tip: Make sure to leave your sponge facing up inside the compact! If the oil you’re absorbing in the sponge starts to transfer into the product, it can make it really tough to get the product out later.

Mally Beauty Poreless Face Defender

Apply this with a sponge after makeup is done and set. The texture is almost like a gel and silicone hybrid, so it’s not too dry or too moist. I take a bit onto the sponge and start to press it into the t-zone. It doesn’t disturb the makeup or leave any type of ashy cast to the skin. They recommend that it can be used before, but I’ve found that I like it best after my makeup is fully applied and set. With this product, skin still looks like skin! Hydrated and not completely matted out. I love how it keeps you from looking oily and greasy but still allows the skin to look hydrated!

If you find that these products really help you beat the Summer melt down, I want to hear about it! Share how this information helped you with a dope selfie or picture of the product with the hashtag #JoyTaughtMe! Enjoy!
