We code. We rock. We are magic. We are whoever we want to be – all we have to do is claim it. Witness Mary Mills, veteran black SoCal surfer gal and subject of “The Sport of Queens” in TXTURE Magazine’s issue #4. Writer Deanna Mundell gives you an in-depth interview and overview of the black presence in the surf scene. For the accompanying photoshoot, we set out one morning with photographer Geordy Pearson to Santa Monica Beach to catch some waves with Mary, aka “Surf Sister”.

Also mentioned in the article: Bay Area surfer Jamila Hubbard, and Costa Rica-based surfer Gwenna “GiGi” Lucas. Jamila fell in love with surfing only two years ago, and now it’s a major part of her life.

Gwenna loved learning to surf so much, she and her husband relocated their lives to Costa Rica. She’s frequently catching waves, documenting her surf life with her GoPro.

TXTURE thanks Damien Baskette of the Black Surfers Collective and SoCal historian Allison Rose Jefferson: this feature would not have been possible if they had not pointed us in the correct direction. On Instagram, follow @onefinoneheart (Mary) and @surfearnegra (Gwenna) for more Black Surf Goddess action.
